This is the cat we found almost 3 years ago that was stranded at my school playground, was only 2-3 weeks old and had to be bottle fed. Well, on February 2nd he was acting strange and had me follow him to the litter box of which he showed me he couldn't go and had just blood droplets. Well, I took him to the vet and to make a long story short, he was blocked and had formed severe crystals. From that day until February 16th he spent 11 days at the vets trying to unblock him. Since he came home, he has been getting better slowly. But, during that time I learned alot about cats, their pain and ways that they show it.
One particular day he came home during that time, I could tell he wasn't doing well. The vet said to watch him closely, as being blocked longer than 24 hours can be life threatening to a cat. But, he thought we were in the clear. Well, I barely slept that night and kept checking on him every two hours, as we had to keep him separated from the other cats to monitor his, food water and urine. When I peeked in on him at 4:00am he was salivating and panting....weird, but he wanted to stay hidden in his carrier and not be bothered. This worried me, so I checked back at 5:00 and he was now forming piles of saliva in various spots. I stayed with him and tried to dry his mane off from all the saliva, and again he was blocked as he hadn't passed any urine since I brought him home from the vet the day before at 2:00pm. I called the vet as soon as I could (6:45 am) and the vet answered and said to bring him back up immediately. He went on to explain that salivation is a process by which cats express extreme discomfort, pain or fear. My heart broke knowing he was in that much pain and I couldn't get to the vet fast enough. After 4 catheterizations (ouch...poor guy) he seems to be on the mend.
Well, just this past week he has been starting to act like his old self. Following me around, sitting near my feet or in my lap, sleeping right near my pillow and.........waking me up at 4:30am to be fed (that I could do without ;). His urine is not the best, and he meows in pain after going, but......he is still going and I am thankful for that. I am also thankful for my husband for paying that outrageous vet bill........but, what ya gonna do?? I couldn't let this little guy go yet....he's my buddy :)
One thing I have noticed, his eyes reflect how he is feeling, kind of like people. I took these pics, as I can tell, he isn't up to par yet, but closer each day!
